Czech Republic receives record number of visa applications

Prague, Czech Republic – Interest for a visa to the Czech Republic reached a record high last year, according to official data released earlier this week.

Over 700,000 applications for Czech visa in 2018

According to figures released by the Czech Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, 2018 was a record-breaking year in terms of visa applications to the Czech Republic.

Diplomatic authorities recorded a total of 722,000 applications for visas (all types combined) to the Czech Republic, according to the annual diplomatic yearbook released by the Czech Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Short-term Schengen visas account for vast majority of applications

But what kind of visas did foreign nationals apply to?

Schengen visas, which provide access not only to the Czech Republic but also to the 25 other European Schengen countries for a maximum of up to 90 days, accounted for the vast majority of visas delivered by Czech embassies throughout the world last year (663,000).

The Schengen area is a free-movement, border-free area comprising 26 European countries (most EU member states + Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland).

The number of applications for long-term and permanent residence, although representing only a fraction of the total deliveries, increased by more than 50% compared to the previous year, reaching 37,000 in 2018.
