Prague, Czech Republic – As part of its long-rumored latest international expansion, American Airlines announced on Thursday new direct flights to Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland out of Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
American Airlines to launch Chicago-Prague direct route in 2020
The connection between the Czech capital and the North American city should start on May 8, 2020. The service is due to be operated five times a week by Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, until October 24.
According to early estimates, the new connection is expected to serve around 48,000 people a year, either to Chicago itself – an important hotspot for Central and Eastern European diaspora – or other connecting destinations like Canada or Central and South American countries.
There are currently three direct flights connecting Prague and the United States to Philadelphia, New York and Newark, with talks about a possible connection with Atlanta, the busiest airport in the world.
New direct flights to Krakow and Budapest
Last week, American Airlines also announced direct flights out of Chicago O’Hare International Airport to two other destinations in Central Europe: Krakow, Poland, and Budapest, Hungary, from May 7, 2020, until the end of October.
“There is strong local demand to Eastern Europe in Chicago, and it’s important that we provide more service for our customers to visit family and friends or explore a new part of the world”, said Vasu Raja, vice-president of network and schedule planning.
The new routes are part of American Airlines’ bid to expand its international network. The U.S. carrier also unveiled new seasonal routes from Philadelphia to Casablanca, Morocco – its first entrance on the African continent – and Reykjavik, Iceland starting in June next summer, as well as direct flights from Dallas-Fort Worth to Tel Aviv, Israel.
These will be the first international flights operated by American Airlines with Krakow, while the U.S. carrier has already launched, last year, new direct flights from Philadelphia to Prague and Budapest, among other European destinations.
The first tickets for the new flights to Prague, Krakow and Budapest are due to go on sale on August 12.
