Krakow, Poland – Netflix is preparing to adapt one of Harlan Coben’s best-selling mystery novels into a Polish original series, Deadline reported.
Last year, the U.S. streaming platform launched a collaboration with the world-famous and best-selling American novelist Harlan Coben, inking a five-year contract and partnership for the remake of over a dozen of his novels.
One of them, ‘The Woods‘, first published in 2007, will be made into a Polish original, the producing team announced this week.
“We are excited to announce that our second original series for Poland will be an adaptation of Harlan Coben’s dual timeline mystery The Woods“, Netflix director of international originals Michael Azzolino said.
Netflix has picked a all-local crew to head its new original European series, choosing two Polish directors, Leszek Dawid and Bartosz Konopka, as well as two Polish writers, Agata Malesinska and Wojtek Miloszewski to adapt ‘The Woods‘, described as “a story full of secrets, a story you will want to follow” by Leszek Dawid.
‘The Woods‘ is due to air next year as a six-part series.
Set in two time spans, 1994 and 2019, Coben’s mystery book tells the story of Pawel Kopinski, a Warsaw prosecutor, who is still grieving and struggling to come to terms with the disappearance of his sister who vanished from a summer camp in the woods twenty five years ago. The discovery of a new homicide victim, however, brings new evidence to light, giving him hope that his sister might still be alive. But old family secrets might also soon resurface…
“I’m so proud to be teaming up with this incredible cast and crew from Poland – and helping introduce their brilliant work to Netflix’s global audience”, Harlan Coben said.
This is only the latest international adaptation of a Coben novel by Netflix, which also includes a Spanish adaptation of ‘The Innocent‘ and an adaptation of ‘The Stranger‘ and ‘Safe‘ in the U.K.
Netflix’s first original Polish production was ‘1983‘. Released last year and co-directed by acclaimed filmmaker Agniezka Holland, 1983 is set in a parallel time line where communism didn’t collapse in Poland and the Iron curtain never fell.
Although not an original Polish production, Netflix is currently filming ‘The Witcher‘ in Poland, a long-awaited project based on the famous series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski, starring Henry Cavill in the lead role.
